Open Chemistry in Google Summer of Code 2018

March 19, 2018

The Open Chemistry project has been accepted as a mentoring organization in the Google Summer of Code for a third year! We look forward to welcoming more students than ever as we have extended our umbrella to cover a number of outstanding open source chemistry projects out there. You can check out our GSoC intro page, our ideas page, and view our instructions for submitting a proposal.

An overview of the projects with direct links to their ideas:

  • Avogadro—advanced molecule editor and visualizer (ideas)
  • cclib—parse, interpret and analyze computational chemistry data (ideas)
  • DeepChem—a Python library democratizing deep learning for science (ideas)
  • 3Dmol.js—3D accelerated molecular graphics JavaScript library (ideas)
  • MSDK—algorithms for processing mass spectrometry data (ideas)
  • NWChem—computational chemistry tools from classical to quantum (ideas)
  • Open Babel—search, convert, analyze, or store chemical data (ideas)
  • RDKit—cheminformatics and machine-learning software (ideas)

We have a great range of mentors, spanning everything from visualization through to quantum calculations of molecular systems, or machine learning applied to chemistry.

Open Chemistry

We are very excited to see what our students propose this year, if you know any that might be interested please let them know about us. Student applications are open now, and close on 27 March, so you still have time but we would like to hear from prospective students soon. Our students will be announced in April, and coding runs from 14 May to 6 August this year. This is a great opportunity to be paid to work on open source, interact with experienced mentors on a number of projects in an array of different programming languages and technology stacks.

Looking forward to a great summer of code, please get in touch if you are interested, or let your friends know if they are eligible students interested in improving open chemistry!
